A neurologist and attorney, Dr. James C. Johnston <https://drjamescjohnston.wordpress.com> ohnston is uniquely qualified for his role in advancing global neurology. He completed neurology training under Dr. Frank Yatsu at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Johnston is also certified in neurorehabilitation and during his 29 years of private practice has served as director of a regional medical center rehabilitation hospital. Dr. Johnston completed law school 20 years ago, and is one of the very few neurologists in the world dually qualified as an attorney. He is certified by the Supreme Courts of Texas and Washington. Additionally, Dr. Johnston is a Barrister of the High Court of New Zealand. He holds Fellowship status in both the American College of Legal Medicine and the Australasian College of Legal Medicine. Dr. Johnston combined his medical and legal training and experience to establish GlobalNeurology®, an international partnership of neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroethicists dedicated to improving worldwide neurological equity.

Dr. Johnston is an Honorary Professor of Neurology at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia where he has served over the past decade. He established the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Global NeuroCare® to advance neurological services in developing regions, and focuses on Ethiopia since it is one of the most medically underserved nations in the world. Global Neurocare® is accredited by the World Health Organization, and focuses on forming collaborative partnerships with local medical facilities in developing countries to improve neurological care.

Global NeuroCare® is one of the few organizations holding Special Consultative Status with the United Nations (UN) ECOSOC. This allows Dr. Johnston to make recommendations directly to the UN intergovernmental bodies, engage with other civil society organizations and participate in UN conferences and meetings. He has presented several policy recommendation statements at the UN High Level Political Forum, Commission for Social Development and Integrative Segment, which were adopted and published, all contributing to advancing healthcare in developing regions.

Dr. Johnston has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials, and letters in a wide variety of leading journals including the Journal of Legal Medicine, Journal of Medical Ethics, Neurology, Headache, Journal of Child Neurology, Journal of Neurological Sciences, Neurologic Clinics, Surgery Journal, and Medical Law International. He has contributed a dozen book chapters in leading treatises on medical law including the American College of Legal Medicine textbook Legal Medicine and Medical Ethics and the internationally acclaimed Legal and Forensic Medicine, which have been cited throughout the world.
